The recycle bin

Restoring a deleted zone, how long you have, and why the free plan does not have one.

Deleting a zone on a paid plan moves it to the recycle bin rather than destroying it. It can be restored complete, records and all.

How long you have

PlanRestore window
Freenone — deletion is immediate and permanent
Starter7 days
Growth14 days
Business30 days
Enterprise90 days

After the window the zone is permanently deleted. You can also purge it yourself before then if you want it gone now.

The free plan really has no bin

Deleting a zone on the free plan removes it and every record permanently and immediately. The portal says so before you confirm, because this is the one action on the platform with no route back.

If you are on free and about to delete something you might want later, export the zone file first. Export is available on every plan and takes seconds.

Restoring does not fix delegation

A restored zone starts being answered for again — but if you changed nameservers at your registrar after deleting it, restoring here does not change them back. Check the delegation as well, or the zone is live in the portal and still not reachable.

What the bin does not hold

  • Individual records. Deleting one record does not put it here; that is what Time Machine is for.
  • Zones removed when an account is closed. Account closure has its own retention, described in the Privacy Policy.
