What KumoDNS is, and what it is not

Authoritative DNS hosting, how it sits beside your registrar, and the things it deliberately does not do.

KumoDNS is authoritative DNS hosting. It answers the lookups for your domain — the records that decide where your website, your email and everything else actually go.

Your registrar and your DNS are two different things

Your registrar is who you bought the domain from and who you renew it with. They also, by default, answer DNS for it.

Moving to KumoDNS changes only the second half. You keep your registrar, you keep your renewal, and you change one setting there: the nameservers your domain is delegated to. Nothing about ownership moves.

What the portal manages

  • Zones — one per domain you host here.
  • Records — A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT and the rest, per zone.
  • DNSSEC — signing, key rollover, and the DS record to hand back to your registrar.
  • History and recovery — Time Machine versions, a recycle bin for deleted zones, and BIND zone file import and export.
  • Statistics — how many lookups each zone answered, day by day.

What it does not do

It does not host your website or your email. It points visitors and mail at whoever does. This is worth being precise about, because it changes what an outage means: if our nameservers are answering, your DNS is working even when the site those records point at is down — and the reverse is also true.

It is not a registrar. You cannot buy, transfer or renew a domain here. If your domain expires or is suspended at the registry, no configuration in this portal can answer for it.

It does not run recursive resolvers. We answer queries about your domains; we are not a resolver you point a laptop at.
