Which record types you can create

What is available on each plan, and what each of the common types is for.

What each plan includes

Every plan, including free: A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS and SRV — seven types, and enough to run a website and email.

Growth adds ALIAS, which behaves like a CNAME but is allowed at the zone apex, where CNAME is not.

Business and Enterprise add the rest — CAA, PTR, TLSA, SVCB, HTTPS, SSHFP, DNAME, NAPTR and others, twenty-one in total.

The ones you will actually use

  • A — a name to an IPv4 address. The record that puts a website somewhere.
  • AAAA — the same for IPv6.
  • CNAME — a name to another name. Cannot be used at the apex, and cannot share a name with other records.
  • MX — where mail for the domain goes. Takes a priority and a hostname; lower priority wins.
  • TXT — arbitrary text, used in practice for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and domain verification.
  • NS — delegation of a subdomain to different nameservers.
  • SRV — a service, its port and its host. Used by SIP, XMPP and some Microsoft services.

The ones worth knowing about

  • ALIAS — apex flattening. Point example.com at a hostname your CDN or load balancer gives you.
  • CAA — which certificate authorities may issue for your domain. Cheap to add and it closes off an entire class of mis-issuance.
  • TLSA — certificate pinning through DNS. Only meaningful with DNSSEC signed, since the record's value is only trustworthy if the zone is.
  • SSHFP — SSH host key fingerprints, same reasoning.
  • PTR — reverse DNS. Only useful if you control the reverse zone, which for most people means their hosting provider rather than here.

If a type is missing from the menu

It is not available on your plan. The types are gated by plan rather than hidden, and the comparison table shows which tier adds what.
