Changing plan

How upgrades and downgrades are timed and charged, what happens if an upgrade invoice goes unpaid, and how to cancel a change.

Plans can be changed at any time from Plan in the portal. Compare the tiers first — the comparison shows every limit side by side.

Upgrades take effect when they are paid

Choosing a bigger plan shows you two figures before anything happens: what you pay now, and what you pay from then on.

The amount due today is pro-rated — the difference between the two plans for the days left in your current billing period, not a full second month. If nine days of a thirty-one day month remain, you pay for nine days of the difference. The recurring price shown beside it is what you pay at each renewal afterwards.

Confirming raises an invoice and charges your saved card straight away. The plan changes the moment that payment succeeds, and the new limits are available immediately.

If the payment does not go through

The upgrade is not applied. Nothing about your account changes — you stay on the plan you were on, with everything it includes, and there is nothing extra to pay.

The invoice stays on your Billing page and you have seven days to pay it. During those seven days:

  • You remain on your current plan. An upgrade is not applied on credit.
  • The invoice is not treated as a debt. It will not trigger reminders, and it can never suspend your account or interrupt your DNS.
  • You can pay it at any time from Plan, and the upgrade applies then.

An unpaid upgrade is cancelled after seven days

If it has not been paid by the eighth day, we cancel it for you and email you to say so. You will also see a notice in the portal the next time you sign in.

Nothing is lost. Because an upgrade only ever applies on payment, your account never left the plan it was on, and cancelling the invoice leaves you owing nothing. You can start the same upgrade again whenever you like — it will be priced fresh from that day, against whatever remains of your billing period then.

Cancelling an upgrade yourself

You do not have to wait for it to lapse. Plan shows any upgrade waiting for payment with a Cancel upgrade button beside it. Cancelling stops the invoice being payable and changes nothing else.

Starting a new upgrade also replaces an unpaid one rather than adding to it, so you will never end up with two invoices for the same change.

Downgrades start at your next billing period

A downgrade is scheduled rather than applied. You keep the plan you have paid for until the period ends, and the new one starts after that.

A scheduled change can be cancelled before it takes effect, from the same page.

Read this before downgrading

A lower plan has lower limits, and something has to give:

  • Zones and records. If you hold more than the target plan allows, resolve it before the change lands.
  • Record types. Types available only above the target plan stop being available. Existing records are the thing to check first.
  • DNSSEC is not on the free plan. Moving to free on a signed zone means removing the DS record at your registrar first — see DNSSEC for why that order is not negotiable.
  • History and the recycle bin shrink to the new plan's windows. Versions and deleted zones outside the shorter window go.
  • The SLA credit is a paid-plan remedy. The 100% availability commitment still covers you on free; the service credit does not.

Moving to the free plan is a cancellation

Going from a paid plan to free is treated as a cancellation rather than a downgrade, because it ends the subscription. Contact us so zones and data are handled properly rather than caught by an automatic limit.

Trials

Paid plans include a 30-day trial before the first charge. Changing plan during a trial does not extend it.
